I wrote about my love affair with dental care in February.
Today I received a little message from my dentist, Dr. Kerry Tryon (who is The Greatest Dentist Ever).
His office, in addition to providing exemplary care, definitely knows how to maximize social media exposure. Thought I would share it as it dovetails with my belief that you only get the one set of teeth and they are worth most anything to take care of.
Note that these posts are tagged "Raw Privilege." Because I truly do understand how fortunate I am to have been provided with the opportunity to write them.

Why is that SO expensive?
That is an interesting and, I think, a very complicated question. I have been asked that question many times throughout my career. In fact I have asked that question of others many times myself in the purchase of a car, a suit, someone's advice, a loaf of bread or just a pair of socks. The actual fact of the matter is I think the answer is really a matter of opinion!
"What is it that makes something so expensive?" I wonder if a better question to be asking is "What is the value I am getting for the money I am spending?" The very fact of living life demands that we spend money. I think everyone realizes that everything of value has a cost associated with it. The cost may be in the form of money, or of time, or of emotion or of something else....whatever else we consider to have value has a cost associated with it. If the cost to value ratio is too high, the purchase is too "expensive" because we paid for more than what we got. If the cost to value ratio is equal, the deal was a good one and we can be satisfied with the deal. We got what we paid for! If the cost was less than the value, that is a rare deal. These are the deals we dream about.
A recent and very sensitive example of the "cost too high" and the "value too little" is in the many "good deals" turned "bad" by the bursting of the infamous housing bubble! The overinflated values suddenly deflated leaving homeowners paying mortgages on homes with values far less than they were told. Bad deal!! On the other end of the "deal spectrum" is the man who was looking in the "for sale" section of the newspaper for a car to buy and found the sale of a late model Chevy Corvette. Asking price....$1!!!! Regardless of the reality of the story, if it was true, it would be a "once in a lifetime" deal! In this case, the "value" far outweighed the cost!
In dentistry, "value" is created through longevity of treatment, or in other words, how long will it last before you have to do it again? The better the treatment is done the first time, the longer it should last and the fewer times it has to be redone! That's a good deal! Poor dentistry, however low the cost may be, is always the most expensive dentistry. Repeatedly replaced restorations whether it is sealants, fillings, crowns, or whatever the procedure may be is never a good deal. Convenient scheduling, painless service and beautiful, natural looking restorations are components of "added value."
So maybe instead of asking "Why is that dentistry so expensive?" the right question to ask is "What is the value of your dental care?"
Our goal is that for any dentistry we do, the answer will always be....priceless!
