As some of you know, I am the estimator/bookkeeper/accountant/payroll lady/go to the bank person for Ken's business. As well as VP, Corporate Secretary, and (oh, yeah...) 51% owner. :) We're a HUB, baby! Or at least, we have applied for that status.
We do most of our work together in odd hours (evenings, weekends, early mornings before I go to my full-time university job). It is frustrating to not have regular, long periods of work time in the office together (as do most (many?) work teams...)
So this week, while I am on Spring Break, we are catching up with a lot of work for the business.
Just now, Ken asked me something like, "Have we invoiced so & so?" I responded, "Yes, sir."
Now, he has an aversion to me calling him "sir." Possibly because he is several years older than me; possibly because he just doesn't like it. But note that I also call people in stores, our teenager, my co-workers, and my student assistants "sir" or "ma'am" when I respond to a question from any of them because, well, I don't think it sounds very nice to say, "WHAT!?" or "Yeah?" or "Huh?" It is ingrained, comes out automatically, and I am working on breaking the habit, but it is hard. (Harder than cutting down on swearing, which I did VERY soon after we married...)
So (getting back to the story) I say, "Yes, sir."
He says, "Don't call me sir."
I say, "Okay; yes, Jackass."
This gives me quite a case of the giggles. Boy, I'm gonna be a mess when I get back to my real job next week.
We have agreed that he will call me, "Sheba, Queen of The Nile" in such conversational situations.
