RECYLING THIS MESSAGE...BECAUSE IT IS IMPORTANT AND TIMELY...

Right now there is a congressional initiative to dramatically increase opportunities of study abroad for U.S. students -

The Senator Paul Simon Study Abroad Foundation Act.

However, the bill is currently being held up in the Senate.

Due to election year politics, this bill has been wedged into a difficult position. If the legislation does not pass by the end of this year, it will die.

The goal of this group is to ask U.S. friends to send letters to your Senators to ask them to pass the Simon  Act this year!  To access a sample letter, please visit: http://www.nafsa.org/simonalert

DID YOU KNOW… that only 1 percent of American college students study abroad each year?

DID YOU KNOW… that 95% of the world’s population growth over the next fifty years is expected to occur outside Europe, yet four European countries dominate as the leading destination for U.S. study abroad?

DO YOU BELIEVE... the opportunity to gain the valuable global skills today’s employers are looking for is something that should be accessible to all students?

JOIN THE MOVEMENT FOR STUDY ABROAD...

ACT TODAY!

Send a letter to your members of Congress! http://www.nafsa.org/simonalert

I've sent the letter to both my senators. I hope it helps, but please remember both of them are a little lacking in perception. But don't quote me on that until after the vote.

Wow those are some startling statistics....I've long been a fan of mandiatory public service time out of High School - like the Peace Corps...this would could be a similar idea....

Great to see this information starting to appear on blogs (personal or professional) that international educators/NAFSAns have. Thanks for your advocacy, Mary Beth!

will send letters tomorrow - all printed - I have something for you... have fun in DC!

Those stats ARE startling.

We have a 100% study abroad rate in this household, and while the boys did France and Spain, I'm guessing the Czech Republic, from which dd is en route as I write, is not one of the top four.

I can't think of anything more important for a child's education than living out of her comfort zone in a place where "US" has different connotations than it does for us.
