Thursday night we had the first meeting of our new Daughters of the King study group. Six women were present and a few others had to miss who will join us later. There is a liturgy for the beginning of the study which we incorporated into the regular Thursday night Eucharist (we attend that before we meet). Fr. Court spoke movingly about the work of this group in upholding and bearing the cross in our parish and in our daily lives. The official hymn of DOK is "Lift High the Cross."
We were celebrating the feast (from Friday) that TEC calls Holy Cross Day. The Eastern Catholic and Orthodox churches celebrate it as Exaltation of the Cross, and Friday morning as I walked the dogs before going to exercise class, I passed my across the street neighbor: St. Maximus the Confessor Orthodox Misson. At 6:45 a.m. Divine Liturgy they had a full house of people worshipping (it's a small sanctuary in an old Victorian house - the second floor is the manse).
I love walking past there and seeing their presence light (candle) burning all the time. They stand up all through worship. I love having them as my neighbor.
